This article analyzes the current international legal situation in the Arctic & provides an overview of the different attempts of the Arctic states to expand their sovereignty to Arctic waters. It elaborates the division of the Arctic Ocean into different national maritime zones under the regime of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) & explains how a coastal state can secure sovereign rights over the outer continental shelf & its natural resources, such as oil & gas, beyond its exclusive economic zone. Taking into account the impending environmental pollution in the Arctic, this article examines the possibility of negotiating, under the auspices of the UN, an Arctic treaty system modeled on the Antarctic Treaty. Since the legal situation in the Arctic is very different from that in Antarctica, the authors prefer the current approach of close regional cooperation between the Arctic States to an international treaty for the Arctic.
